Deadwood, the seat of Lawrence County, is the only South Dakota city where Las Vegas-style gambling is specifically legal under state law. Much of the tax revenue from those activities currently finds its way into state government’s general fund.

Now two of the state lawmakers who represent Lawrence County want Deadwood to start keeping a bigger share of the millions of dollars that state government has long been getting.

Republican Sen. Randy Deibert of Deadwood, a professional land surveyor and a former Lawrence County Commission member, is prime sponsor of Senate Bill 102.

State government’s general fund currently receives 70% of the tax revenue collected in the state Gaming Commission fund.
