Millions of people watching the New York Yankees play the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night had a none-too-subtle message beamed into their living rooms via an advertising sign near home plate: “Bet like a Caesar, every inning.”

It was an entreaty from Caesars Entertainment, one of the country’s largest casino companies, to get people to engage in so-called “microbets.”

These are fast-paced bets that can be made one after another as a game unfolds, on something as minuscule as whether the next pitch will be a strike or a ball.

For longer-shot odds, gamblers can bet whether the batter will get hit by the pitch, or smash a home run.
