A bill that would ban rapid-fire betting on things like the result of a specific pitch in baseball, a pass in football or a shot in basketball took a step closer to approval Monday in the New Jersey Legislature.

The bill would outlaw so-called “microbetting” when the bet is offered online. An amendment to the bill Monday exempted bets placed in Atlantic City’s nine casinos or the state’s two horse tracks that accept sports bets.

The measure was discussed and released from the Assembly Tourism, Gaming and the Arts committee. Its next step will be consideration by the full Assembly.
