A state assemblyman says a new convention center in the North Jersey Meadowlands would be “awful” for Atlantic City and the state as a whole.
Assemblyman Don Guardian, R-Atlantic, a former Atlantic City mayor, issued a statement Monday amounting to a shot across the bow of lawmakers considering a Meadowlands convention center, saying no group in its right mind would choose to hold an event “in the asphalt-laden swamps of New Jersey” when they could hold it in Manhattan just a few miles away.
Guardian also called for preserving the Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center Hotel, saying not only should it not be allowed to close, but also opposing a $100 million redevelopment plan that would turn half of its 502 rooms into senior citizen housing.
