In a deal that could have major impacts on Atlantic City, Fertitta Entertainment, the parent company of Golden Nugget Atlantic City, announced Thursday it is buying casino giant Caesars Entertainment.

The new company would own four of Atlantic City’s nine casinos.

While that is a number that New Jersey regulators have allowed to exist in the past when there were 12 casinos in the city, it was not immediately clear whether the state might force a sale of one or more of the properties — or whether the company might seek to do so on its own.

The new company would own Golden Nugget Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City and Tropicana Atlantic City.
