If passed, the Greyhound Protection Act could have major implications for Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack, one of the last two active dog tracks in the country.
Some West Virginia state senators say they are ready to see greyhound racing come to an end, according to a letter sent to the state’s federal delegation.
Lawmakers who support the measure argue greyhound racing is no longer economically sustainable. They point to animal welfare concerns and state subsidies as reasons to end the industry.
But not everyone agrees. “There are 134 legislators, and eight signed a letter,” said Sen. Ryan Weld, R-Brooke. “I don’t know the percentage on that, but it seems pretty low.”
