Cambodia’s Prime Minister has directly linked the online scam problem that has plagued the nation to the growth of online gambling and casino-related businesses.
In statements at the opening of the two-day International Conference on Combating Online Scams (ICCOS), Prime Minister Hun Manet said that the scam industry did not originate in Cambodia and is not confined to the country, but that casinos and online gaming caused the country’s early exposure to the issue.
Online gaming in Cambodia was regulated between roughly 2015 and 2020, causing a massive boom in business set-up, investment and real estate purchases, transforming areas such as Sihanoukville, with significant Chinese investment.
