Workers who are pushing for a smoking ban in the city’s casinos are using an alarming report on projected job losses to try to bolster their case for prohibiting gamblers from lighting up inside the gambling halls.
Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE) on Monday seized on a report issued last week by the Atlantic County Economic Alliance predicting that more than 1 in 3 casino jobs could be lost due to competition from new casinos in New York and North Jersey, as well as other factors.
The group, which has been trying to enact a smoking ban for over five years, said eliminating smoking will make the casinos more appealing to gamblers and non-gambling visitors, which could lessen the impact of nearby competition.
