More than 30 politicians, community groups, and gambling reform advocates have urged the Northern Territory government to strengthen protections against gambling harm, following the Australian federal government’s recent gambling reforms.
According to NT News, an open letter published yesterday backs independent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Justine Davis’s proposed bill, titled the “Gambling Reform Bill”, which is due to be introduced to the Northern Territory parliament next week.
The proposed legislation would prohibit gambling inducements such as bonus bets, increase protections for young people, introduce tougher penalties for operators that breach regulations, and make gambling harm prevention a key objective of gambling legislation.
