LAS VEGAS (AP) – A Las Vegas fire official says no injuries were reported after firefighters quelled flames that badly damaged a boarded-up former motel property downtown.
Fire spokesman Tim Szymanski (zim-ANN’-skee) says a search didn’t find anyone in the 12-unit former Star motel on South 3rd Street, and investigators now are probing what sparked the fire about 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Szymanski says the two-story property was vacant, but that witnesses say it’s been used by squatters and was being renovated.
He says there was a previous fire at the property in July 2014.
Parts of the roof collapsed on Monday, and thick smoke from the fire was visible in the area between downtown high-rises and the Stratosphere hotel-casino.
