SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – Springfield has adopted new casino ethics rules barring elected officials and top city administrators from benefiting from the local casino for a period after leaving office.

Mayor Dominic Sarno signed the new ethics ordinance on Tuesday, a day after it was unanimously approved by the city council.

The ordinance says the mayor and councilors can’t hold a direct or indirect interest in, or be employed by, the western Massachusetts casino license holder for 3 years after leaving office.

City department heads and their top aides are similarly barred for two years after leaving their city jobs.

MGM Resorts International holds the license and plans an $800 million resort casino in Springfield.
