SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The chief executive of MGM Resorts International has agreed to join other top company officials at a meeting with city officials in Springfield to discuss changes in a casino project.

The Las Vegas-based company confirmed last week that it plans to reduce the scope of the $800 million casino development by 14 percent.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno indicated he had been caught off guard by the changes and requested that MGM chief executive James Murren attend a meeting on Thursday to discuss the latest plans.

Murren said in a letter to Sarno on Monday that he had rearranged his schedule to be at the meeting with other company executives.

MGM, which had earlier announced plans to eliminate a hotel tower, says it remains committed to the project and to Springfield.
