Effort to ban online gambling revived in Congress

LAS VEGAS (AP) – A congressman is reviving an effort to ban online gambling in the United States.

Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz (CHAY’-fits) from Utah reintroduced his Restoration of America’s Wire Act bill on Wednesday which would reverse the Justice Department’s 2011 decision allowing online gambling with the exception of sports betting. The bill is identical to one introduced during the prior legislative session.

The director of research firm GamblingCompliance Chris Krafcik doesn’t expect the bill to pass.

He says two powerful forces are on either side of the issue which will lead to a likely stalemate. Las Vegas Sands CEO and billionaire political donor Sheldon Adelson supports banning online gambling. Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts and lawmakers advocating for state’s rights oppose the effort.

Online gambling is in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware.
