NEW YORK (AP) – A longtime fugitive and co-founder of an Antigua-based sports betting site won’t have to go to prison after pleading guilty in New York to a gambling-related charge.

Manhattan federal Judge William Pauley said Monday that Haden Ware was no more than a gopher in the gambling enterprise.

The judge noted that Ware has devoted himself to pursuits that help people and said there was little chance he would commit crime again.

At sentencing, Pauley said Ware must remain on probation for six months. He imposed no fine.

Ware returned to the United States in January to plead guilty. He had been a fugitive since 2002, when an indictment accused him and two others of operating a sports betting business.

The business, World Sports Exchange, operated from 1996 through 1998.
