The Orange County bookmaker at the center of the sports betting scandal involving Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter has been released from prison and spoke exclusively with NBCLA.
Mathew Bowyer, 51, served seven months behind bars after running an illegal bookmaking business that lasted 25 years. He said at some point, he made about $1 million a month.
“To go from butlers to private jets to Rolls-Royces, all these fancy things material-wise, to all of a sudden you’re eating what I consider to be dog food,” Bowyer said from his home in San Juan Capistrano.
Bowyer was sentenced to prison last August for cheating on taxes and for running an illegal sports betting business.
