After the 2022 election, the state of play on sports gaming seemed abundantly clear in California.

Following that bruising and historically expensive campaign, virtually everyone in politics agreed the state’s gaming tribes had thoroughly bested a coalition of sports betting operators led by DraftKings and FanDuel, even though neither side’s initiative actually won on election day.

So much has changed since then that you may need a refresher. The tribes and operators ran dueling measures on the Nov. 8 ballot, each seeking to get their plan to legalize sports betting in the Golden State approved by voters.

Proposition 26, supported by the tribes, would have legalized in-person sports betting at tribal casinos and horse racing tracks.
