‘We held the line for the whole city.’ Looking back 10 years at the closing of the Trump Taj Mahal

They gathered on the Boardwalk in the pre-dawn darkness of Oct. 10, 2016, watching as people inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort struggled to clamp locks to the main entrance door.

Wearing red union shirts and holding signs denouncing billionaire Carl Icahn, who owned the casino and was shutting it down rather than continue to pay for health and pension benefits, they went from strikers to unemployed people at the stroke of 6 a.m.

And while there were some tears and hugs, there was a lot more anger and even more certainty that members of Local 54 of the Unite Here union did the only thing they could in the fight with Icahn.
