Following a cease-and-desist letter sent in June last year, online sweepstakes casino operator VGW Holdings has been forced to pay New York regulators a fine totaling $8 million, including penalties.
New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that she had secured the $8 million in a statement released on Wednesday.
Sweepstakes gambling, which allows users to play traditional online casino games like slots and table games through the use of virtual coins – which can then be redeemed for real-world prizes, is illegal in New York after Governor Kathy Hochul signed Senate Bill 5935 into law in December.
