New Jersey lawmakers passed a bill Monday to outlaw sweepstakes casinos statewide. The measure, A5447, received a 34-5 vote in the Senate. It had already cleared the Assembly 69-10 back in June.
Gov. Phil Murphy must now choose whether to sign it. The bill prohibits offering sweepstakes when users have to pay or give an entry fee.
New Jersey is the sixth state passing such a ban in 2025. Connecticut, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, and New York sent similar bills to their governors.
A5447 spells out what counts as a sweepstakes: any promotional, advertising, or marketing event, contest, or game allowing players to win prizes or prize equivalents through a dual-currency system.
