Louisville recovery groups are expanding resources for people struggling with gambling addiction as sports betting grows in Kentucky and basketball season approaches.

The Louisville Recovery Community Connection is working with SOS for Addictions and the creator of the Evive app to raise awareness about gambling addiction and connect people with support. Advocates said gambling can be difficult to identify from the outside because the signs are often financial and private.

“For some, sports betting can start as entertainment,” said Daniel Harvey, grant manager with the Louisville Recovery Community Connection. But he said it can become difficult to stop.

Harvey described gambling as “probably the most dangerous thing” he sees “aside from fentanyl and hard drugs.”
