Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit against the state filed by dozens of college athletes accused of sports gambling. She claims the investigation did not violate the athletes’ civil rights.

The investigation began in September when more than two dozen people, including current and former athletes at Iowa and Iowa State, were charged with illegally placing bets by using other people’s online gambling accounts.

In March, the Story County Attorney’s Office dropped the charges against four of the athletes. Prosecutors cited concerns over the use of “geo-fencing” software during the investigation.

The Division of Criminal Investigation maintains it used that software appropriately.
