The Premier League has been warned that blocking gambling companies from operating as front-of-shirt sponsors has “barely scratched the surface” in the attempts to limit exposure to betting brands.
This season is the first since 2003-04 where a Premier League team has not carried the name of a gambling partner on its chest after a voluntary agreement was struck by the 20 clubs to collectively withdraw an often lucrative option from the marketplace.
The opportunity to collect revenues from the betting sector remains open through other sponsorship deals — such as on sleeves, training wear and advertising boards — and that has ensured gambling platforms have retained visibility in the new campaign.
