Premier League clubs are under pressure to agree to a voluntary ban on shirt sponsorship by betting companies within the next few weeks with the government set to publish a White Paper on gambling early in the new year.

The 20 clubs had looked set to agree to the move last summer but were persuaded to shelve it by some who believed that Liz Truss would scrap tougher gambling rules when she became prime minister.

However, the new government is understood to have made it clear to the Premier League that it expects a voluntary ban to be put in place otherwise it will consider making part of new legislation.
