The Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians is taking one more swing at stopping the North Fork Mono Casino & Resort — the 264,000-square-foot operation planned to open in weeks just off Highway 99 north of the city of Madera.
Picayune, which owns Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, isn’t hiding that Highway 99 access is part of what worries the tribe. It has suggested in court documents that a rival mega-casino sitting on the valley floor, hugging the main north-south freeway, would peel off travelers who might otherwise wind their way up to Chukchansi Gold.
The federal complaint, filed in June, is Picayune’s third federal lawsuit in 14 years against the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California.
