Three Brazilian trade groups have filed petitions with the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to suspend President Lula’s provisional measure to ban online betting and gaming.

The measure, introduced on Friday (25 September) immediately bans online betting operations in the country, with operators given until 6 October to take betting sites and apps down. Licence revocation is then due to occur 30 days after the measure’s publication, on 25 October.

While the measure took effect immediately, it will still need to be reviewed by Congress to enter into law permanently, which may be done over a period of up to 120 days.

Trade groups representing the sector have now filed petitions in the Supreme Court asking for the measure’s effects to be suspended in the meantime.
