The Australian government has announced a series of reforms to the nation’s gambling advertising rules, including a complete ban on gambling-related ads during live sport in daytime hours.

The reforms, unveiled by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday, follow recent pressure for the government to action the findings of a 2023 parliamentary inquiry into online gambling and its impacts on those experiencing gambling harm, which recommended a complete ban on all forms of advertising for online gambling.

While the government has refrained from going to those extremes, it has addressed concerns over exposing gambling to children by restricting gambling advertising on broadcast television to no more than three ads each hour between 6am and 8.30pm, including a complete ban during live sport broadcasts within those hours.
