What was your first job in the gaming industry? Did you have previous experience in other industries? What drew you to gaming?
My first job in gaming was as a background investigator with the San Pasqual Tribal Gaming Commission. When my tribe opened our casino, I saw it as an opportunity to be part of something important for our community, and I was excited to see where that opportunity would take me. I had no idea at the time just how much it would shape my career.
What do you like about working in gaming? What is it about the industry that keeps you engaged? What is unique about it?
Tribal gaming is one of the largest economic drivers for many of our communities, so I feel good knowing that my work contributes to protecting something that has such a significant impact. As a regulator, I feel an immense responsibility to protect the integrity of tribal gaming and what it provides for our people. What makes tribal gaming especially unique is that it is a real exercise of tribal sovereignty. That has always made the work bigger than just gaming for me.
Looking ahead, what impact do you hope to make in the industry, and what would you like your leadership legacy to be?
I would like to make an impact on professionals who are often overlooked. Those who came into gaming through nontraditional paths or who may not fit the typical narrative of what a successful leader looks like. There is not just one road to success. I would also like my leadership legacy to be rooted in service, as someone who led with a genuine passion for serving her community, creating opportunities for others, and uplifting those around her.
What personal and professional qualities or traits do you believe are essential for success in the gaming industry, and which of those qualities have helped you thrive in your own career?
It starts with a strong passion to serve. Especially in tribal gaming, you have to understand who and what you are working for. Integrity, accountability, and a willingness to do the work that matters, even when it happens behind the scenes, are also important. Throughout my career, my passion for serving my community and Indian Country has kept me motivated and has guided many of the opportunities I have pursued.
What advice do you have for women seeking careers in gaming?
Stay open to learning, step into opportunities even when you may not feel completely ready, and as you grow, bring other women along with you.
