An overview of igaming revenue in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, Connecticut, West Virginia, Delaware, and Rhode Island, the seven states where online gambling is legal in the U.S.

National

Total igaming revenue for August 2024 in the seven igaming states added up to $686.7 million versus $516.3 million in August 2023. New Jersey set a new record, Pennsylvania’s monthly total was the second highest, and Michigan and Connecticut’s were the third highest all-time.

1. Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania igaming operators earned just under $225 million in revenue last month. It was the second-largest total, falling short of the record set in March of $233.1 million. The Keystone States has broken $200 million in six of the past eight months.

The online casinos generated $179.6 million from slots and $45.4 million from table games, including poker.
Tax revenue generated from August igaming was $79.2 million compared to $63.2 million a year ago.

2. New Jersey

For the month of August 2024, the internet-gambling win reported by online casinos in the Garden State totaled $198.4 million, reflecting growth of 27.8% when compared to $155.3 million reported in August 2023. It also set a new record for igaming revenue in New Jersey, beating the previous record of $197.2 million set in March. And it was the fourth month out of the past eight that the igaming win surpassed $190 million.

Golden Nugget Online took top revenue honors for the month, earning $55 million compared to $42.3 million in August 2023, while second-place Resorts Digital climbed from $42.3 million to $51 million. Borgata generated $42.8 million compared to $40.2 million.

New Jersey collected its 15% of igaming revenue in taxes, totaling $29.7 million compared to last year’s $22.2 million.

3. Michigan

Michigan’s online casinos generated $196.7 million for August, the third-highest total since igaming launched in the Great Lakes State in January 2021. That compared to $152.2 million in 2023. It was the fifth time in the past six months that igaming GGR breached the $190 million mark.

BetMGM remains the board leader, earning $52.5 million in gross revenue compared to $44 million.

The state collected $36.9 million in taxes, while $9.1 million went to the city of Detroit and $4.6 million to tribal jurisdictions, for a total of $50.6 million compared to $40.8 million last year.

4. Connecticut

Connecticut’s two main online-casino operators, DraftKings and FanDuel, in August earned $37.9 million from igaming compared to $28.2 million in 2023, up a whopping 51.5% over last year. It was the third highest total on record in Connecticut.

Connecticut has two other igaming operators, the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe On-Reservation, but even combined, their revenues are a rounding error.

Igaming is taxed at 18%, which earned Connecticut $6.8 million in taxes for the month.

5. West Virginia

The Mountain State’s igaming revenue in August 2024 was $19.9 million compared to $14.4 million year over year. What’s more, the four-week reporting period this year was 28 days compared to 35 last year. The state collected a hair under $3 million in taxes for the reporting period.

6. Delaware

Delaware’s internet casinos recorded a win of $5.7 million, continuing on its upward spiral since Rush Street Interactive replaced 888 at the end of last year. The year-over-year comparison is irrelevant, more than four times as much, though last month RSI’s icasino earned $5.2 million.

Online video lottery (slot) games, likewise, earned $3.7 million, table games $2 million.

7. Rhode Island

Rhode Island’s igaming revenue, monopolized by Bally’s, generated $3 million in August compared to $2.6 million in July.
