The Nevada Gaming Commission on Thursday will consider signing off on a $2,000 fine as part of a proposed settlement for administrative violations at a northern Nevada casino.
The alleged violations involve Jim Kelley’s Tahoe Nugget in Crystal Bay, located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. In addition to the $2,000 fine, the Tahoe Nugget will take compliance steps as part of a stipulated settlement.
In February, the Nevada Gaming Control Board served an order to show cause on the Tahoe Nugget. It was centered on the Board’s inability to contact executives over deficiencies in complying with gaming-registration-renewal requirements for several employees. The property also failed to submit monthly reports on the hiring of gaming employees and didn’t notify the Board when employees were fired, according to the complaint.
The issue dates back to September 2022 when the Board attempted to contact executives about the registrations, only to find an inoperative phone number. After reaching out to owners James and Jeff Kelley, the GCB didn’t receive a response via email or phone.
Subsequent calls to a new number for Jeff Kelley went to voicemail and weren’t returned, the complaint said.
Eventually, James Kelley told the Board that unless someone happens to be in the casino cage at the time of a call, it goes unanswered and no one checks for messages. He said the Board would have to contact him and his brother directly by phone or in person.
That issue has since been rectified, the complaint said.
As part of the agreement, the Tahoe Nugget is required to employ or contract with a compliance officer approved by the Board chair.
