Suffolk Downs to close Oct. 4

September 23, 2014 · 9:54am ET | 6:54am PT

BOSTON (AP) – Suffolk Downs officials says live thoroughbred racing will end for the season – and most likely for good – on the first Saturday in October.

The track announced Tuesday that the racing season originally scheduled to conclude Sept. 29 has been extended for one more week. Officials say they wanted to postpone the final day to give employees an extra week of work and provide for a public celebration as an era comes to an end.

The 79-year-old facility is slated for closure now that Mohegan Sun lost out in its bid for a casino gambling license on land in Revere owned by Suffolk Downs.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission, which awarded the regional casino license to Wynn Resorts, has said it will examine ways of keeping thoroughbred racing alive.
