Scientific Games has gone Down Under for its latest expansion, acquiring Sydney-based Lightning Box for an undisclosed sum.
Lightning Box and Scientific are hardly strangers to each other; the former’s content has long been hosted on the latter’s OpenGaming platform. The deal provides Scientific with proprietary game content, which will be augmented with the company’s own data analytics.
The Australian-based firm specializes in game content for slot machines. Its products tend to be animal-themed, with titles like “Silver Lion” and “Lightning Horseman.” It is an online-gaming provider, with clients that include BetMGM, FanDuel, Loto Quebec, 888, Golden Nugget Online and Rush Street Interactive.
In a statement, Lightning Box CEO Peter Causley wrote, “Having been an OpenGaming partner since its early days, we knew that Scientific Games had the capabilities to propel our games to new heights. We’re now in a better position than ever to bring our robust pipeline of high-quality slots more effortlessly to our global online casino partners.”
Speaking for Scientific, Senior Vice President of Digital Gaming Dylan Slaney said the Australian-made games “are hugely popular with slots players around the world and we welcome these talented game designers to our team.”
SBCAmericas.com described the purchase as “a key step forward in [Scientific’s] strategic plan to become a content-led sustainable growth company.”
CDC Gaming queried Wall Street analysts Barry Jonas (of Truist Securities) and Carlo Santarelli (of Deutsche Bank) on the deal, but did not receive comments.
Scientific shares traded up and down on the news of the day, hovering around $62 a share.
