Another day, another move on the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario front, with the news Monday that Dr. Karin Schnarr will be stepping into the role of chief executive officer and registrar, replacing the outgoing Tom Mungham.

The AGCO announced last March that Mungham was stepping down as CEO and registrar, though he would stay in the position to help facilitate a smooth transition for his replacement.

The AGCO board made the announcement that Schnarr will start in her new role on Sept. 18.

Schnarr is an associate professor in strategic management at the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University. There, she has been director of MBA and BBA programs, as well as sitting on the university’s board of governors and senate.

Schnarr has also served in numerous roles in the provincial government, including as chief of staff to ministers in multiple portfolios, where she guided the development of public policy and legislation.

This summer has been marked by several moves at the AGCO board level.

Lalit Aggarwal announced July 18 that he was stepping down as chair of AGCO’s board of directors, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family. The board’s vice chair, Heidi Reinhart, took on the chair’s responsibilities in an interim role.

Then on July 21, Dave Forestell, who was chairman of the board of iGaming Ontario (and was also on the AGCO board), was named permanent replacement for Aggarwal, becoming permanent chair of the board.

On July 31, Reinhart was appointed chair of iGaming Ontario, just a week or so after she was announced as the interim replacement for Aggarwal. She replaced Forestell.

Mungham joined the AGCO in 2006 and served as its director of licensing and registration, then as its CEO until 2020, when he was appointed by the board to the role of CEO and registrar.

The industry is still waiting on an announcement from the AGCO on potential changes to the regulator’s Advertising Standards revolving around celebrity endorsement. A deadline of May 15 had been set for submissions of opinions and perspectives by stakeholders.
