Riviera name brought down from closed hotel-casino

April 11, 2016 · 9:14pm ET | 6:14pm PT

rivieraA piece of Las Vegas history was removed from the Strip on Monday as crews worked to take down the Riviera name from the former hotel and casino.

The Riviera sign was removed ahead of the building’s demolition this summer. The letters will be kept at the Neon museum.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority purchased the Riviera in February 2015 for $182.5 million plus $8.5 million in related transaction costs. It plans to replace the 26-acre site with an expanded Las Vegas Convention Center.

The 60-year-old casino-hotel where Liberace and Frank Sinatra once were headliners closed down last May. The property had struggled in recent years as development around it went dormant, deterring walk-in traffic.
