PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Newport Grand would get to keep $1 million more a year under a plan endorsed by the Rhode Island House of Representatives.
Lawmakers voted Tuesday to reduce the state’s share of revenue from the facility for two years to help it stay afloat.
The proposal is contained in the House budget proposal.
Some House members argued that it was unfair to let Newport Grand keep more when cities and towns are struggling. But top lawmakers said the money would protect the state’s revenue share by helping Twin River remain in business.
Local voters last fall blocked Newport Grand’s request to offer Las Vegas-style casino games.
Voters approved a similar plan to allow blackjack and other casino games at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln.
