The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency will no longer allow prop bets on single-game wagers involving college athletes, such as the number of rebounds or yards gained, but bets on season awards, such as the winner of the Heisman Trophy, will be still allowed.

“The decision brings Maryland in line with other states that have disallowed these wagers to protect college athletes against potential harassment. The intent is to focus college sports wagers on the teams rather than on individual athletes,” the state commented.

Maryland’s action comes shortly after the Ohio Casino Control Commission also banned betting operators from offering prop bets involving college athletes. Regulators across the country are responding to a request by the NCAA in Ohio in late January to ban college prop betting amid concerns about student-athletes’ safety.

These recent changes narrowed down the list of jurisdictions that allow college player prop wagers to four: Kansas, Michigan, Louisiana and Washington, D.C.
