Judge won’t order Arizona to license Glendale-area casino

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – A judge has rejected a request from a southern Arizona tribe that he order Arizona officials to issue certificates allowing a tribal casino to open near Glendale.

U.S. District Judge David Campbell on Thursday refused to issue a preliminary injunction forcing the Arizona Department of Gaming to issue a license for the Tohono O’Odham Nation’s new resort near Glendale.

The judge found that the tribe hadn’t shown that it would suffer irreparable harm, in part because it plans to open the casino using bingo-style slot machines that will be just as profitable as gambling authorized under a full casino license.

The judge allowed part of the tribe’s suit against Gaming Director Daniel Bergin to proceed while dismissing Gov. Doug Ducey and Attorney General Mark Brnovich as defendants.
