NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – A federal judge is expected to rule Friday on a key point in a lawsuit that seeks to stop New Jersey from implementing sports gambling.
The four major pro sports leagues and the NCAA sued Gov. Chris Christie after he vowed to defy a federal ban and allow sports betting as soon as January.
The two sides argued in court this week over whether the leagues and NCAA could show they would suffer harm from New Jersey’s action, thereby allowing them to sue.
If U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp rules against the leagues, it’s expected the federal government will join the suit. New Jersey has argued in court papers that the 1990s law prohibiting sports gambling in all but four states is unconstitutional.
