LAS VEGAS (AP) – Former Las Vegas Sands Corp. executive Michael Leven says there’s no mystery about his retirement from the company board after 16 years.

The former president and chief operating officer of the Las Vegas Strip casino operator told The Associated Press on Wednesday that at 78 years old, it’s just time to step down and relax.

Leven said he’s gotten lots of calls asking if he’s OK since the Las Vegas-based owner of the Venetian and Palazzo resorts disclosed his departure in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Monday.

Las Vegas Sands is headed by billionaire Sheldon Adelson. A company spokesman declined Wednesday to comment.

The SEC filing called Leven’s retirement immediate, and said he was also retiring from the board of the company’s subsidiary Sands China Ltd. It owns resorts in Macau.

Leven joined the Las Vegas Sands board in August 2004.
