DOVER, Del. (AP) – A proposed financial bailout for Delaware’s three gambling casinos was among the central issues remaining for state lawmakers to consider on the final day of this year’s legislative session.
Senate lawmakers approved legislation last week providing $10 million in taxpayer money to the casinos, which say they are struggling with increased competition from neighboring states and have to share too much of their gambling revenue with the state.
The bill cleared a House committee on Monday, but Democratic leaders attached an amendment requiring the casinos to return the money if they reduce their work force by 3 percent or more.
Supporters of the bill have touted it as an effort to save jobs in Delaware’s gambling industry, one of the largest sources of revenue for the state’s general fund.
