Compton announced Sunday at a CDC Gaming media gathering that he will retire effective Sept. 30, 2024, just before the start of the next G2E.

He will continue in his role as CDC business manager and is helping staff the CDC booth at this year’s G2E. He lauded the accomplishments of the CDC leadership team, with such recent expansions as “The CDC Gaming Show” weekly broadcast and a partnership with Inside Asian Gaming.

“Jeffrey assembled an amazing cross-section of the gaming industry. His intuitive leadership and ability to attract whatever talent was needed to accomplish his goals has allowed CDC Gaming Reports to flourish for two decades,” publisher Cory Roberts said.

Howard Stutz, senior reporter for the Nevada Independent, said CDC Gaming’s newsletter grew into an “essential and important” source of news reports and commentaries about gaming industry issues nationally and internationally.

“Jeffrey’s foresight and support led to CDC Gaming Reports’ recognition as the go-to platform for gaming-industry news,” said Stutz, an award-winning reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal before serving as executive editor of CDC Gaming Reports from 2018 to 2021.

“On a personal note, Jeffrey offered me the opportunity to restart my journalism career after a brief hiatus. He remains a close friend and confidant and I wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.”

The CDC in the company name stands for Compton Dancer Consulting, which he formed with video poker guru and author Bob Dancer. At first, it distributed the print version of “Adams Daily Report,” a summation of industry news compiled by consultant Ken Adams, now senior analyst with CDC.

CDC Gaming has grown into one of the largest gaming-industry business news websites in the world and distributes more than 70 newsletters a month to over 23,000 casino-industry executives. In July 2020, Compton named Roberts as publisher, but continued to oversee the company’s income streams and other business matters. Compton still does consulting work for casinos, including the El Cortez in downtown Las Vegas.

He is credited with writing the first book explaining how players benefit from joining slot clubs. The Las Vegas Advisor Guide to Slot Clubs was published in the early 1990s, shortly after casinos began player tracking. As part of his research, he became a member of every slot club in Nevada and many nationwide.

Compton has been a guest lecturer on gaming and marketing at the Community College of Southern Nevada, the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and the University of Nevada Reno. He has a bachelor’s degree and MBA from Babson College and was in the inaugural class of the University of Nevada Reno’s Executive Development program in 1991.
