California casino dispute heads back to courtroom

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – Members of a Native American tribe at odds over control of a Central California casino are due back in court amid settlement talks aimed at reopening the casino’s doors to gamblers.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. O’Neill is scheduled to hear an update Wednesday from attorneys for the competing factions behind the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino northeast of Fresno.

Officials for the state and the National Indian Gaming Commission shut down the casino earlier this month when an armed faction stormed it, sending hundreds of gamblers running with chips still on the tables.

The office of Attorney General Kamala Harris and Gov. Jerry Brown’s adviser on tribal affairs both say the casino should remain closed.

They say that tensions within the tribe remain high despite court-ordered settlement talks.
