The Casper City Council officially approved a 180-day citywide moratorium on the establishment of new simulcasting and gaming facilities during its Tuesday meeting.
City staff say they plan to use the hiatus to evaluate spacing standards, potential zoning district restrictions and buffering requirements to ensure future developments align with long-term land-use plans and the character of local communities.
While the moratorium will prevent the addition of new simulcasting activity, the ordinance does not affect existing operations, which are permitted to continue their business. They are prohibited from expanding during the six-month period, though.
Recent changes in state law also influenced the council’s decision to pause new developments, City Attorney Eric Nelson previously said.
