The Washington state Senate on Wednesday approved a bill allowing sports wagering on in-state college teams at tribal casinos, passing it 41-8.
The measure permits bets on collegiate sporting events involving Washington-based colleges and universities but prohibits wagers on the performance or nonperformance of individual student-athletes enrolled at those schools. In-game proposition bets on specific players would remain banned.
Under current law, sports wagering in Washington is limited to tribal gaming facilities and does not allow betting on college teams located within the state. The bill would allow tribes to offer wagering on those games, so long as bets are placed in person at a tribal casino.
