Fairfax County officials and community advocates are praising Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s veto of legislation that would have allowed a casino in the county, while the bill’s sponsor said he plans to continue pushing the proposal.
On April 9, Spanberger vetoed Senate Bill 756, patroned by Senate Majority Leader Scott Suroville (D-Mount Vernon), saying the measure would override local authority.
“Local governing boards should lead on proposed casino development,” Spanberger said in a statement. “But in Fairfax County, the Board of Supervisors has explicitly opposed this legislation.”
She said the bill would require the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to set a referendum despite its opposition and would allow state lawmakers to determine a casino’s location.
