The state Lottery Department has approved Petersburg’s paperwork to host a casino, so now the only left between now and a November vote is a judge’s approval for the referendum.
In a July 9 letter to City Manager March Altman and City Attorney Tony Williams, the Lottery Department – which oversees casino operations in Virginia – said it was certifying Petersburg as a casino host city and granting permission “to proceed to the local referendum.” Should the Petersburg Circuit Court agree, then that referendum would be held during the Nov. 5 general election.
City Council has scheduled a special meeting for 8:30 a.m. Monday to officially adopt a resolution asking for the referendum’s approval.
