A host of potential financial threats that could hurt the resort in the coming years is already affecting how the city government and the casino industry make big decisions.
The city’s main casino workers’ union, Unite Here Local 54, has reached labor deals with five of the nine casinos.
But far from the four-year, benefit-laden deals that have come to be standard, these casinos agreed with the union to extend the current contract for just one year, including a 2.5% salary increase.
The union and casino managers agree that with so many unknowns on the near-term horizon, it simply doesn’t make sense to lock themselves into a multi-year contract when conditions could be significantly worse in two or three years.
