Gambling Commission executive director Tim Miller has warned of the limits the regulator can achieve when up against highly powerful black market entities.
In a Q&A following his speech at the BGC AGM yesterday (26 February), Miller highlighted the UKGC was up against criminal enterprises including Russian gangs.
It comes amid a renewed focus on the black market by both the industry and the regulator as the sector braces for a possible surge in the segment following major tax hikes due to bite April 2026 and 2027.
While he insisted the body was taking a robust approach – with international regulators increasingly interested in their enforcement approach – he cautioned it was important to remain “realistic”.
