Sen. Richard Blumenthal is introducing new legislation surrounding gambling addiction. The bill would establish the first federal funding for treatment and research.

Sen. Blumenthal is introducing this bill Friday just ahead of the Super Bowl.

This weekend alone, legal sportsbooks are expected to take in over $1.3 billion in bets for the big game, according to the American Gaming Association.

This season, Americans bet $35 billion with legal sportsbooks. This is why Blumenthal proposes the Gambling Addiction Recovery, Investment and Treatment (grit) Act.

He said despite this surge in sports betting, no federal funds are specifically set aside to treat and research the addiction.
