A Republican version of legislation to renew a state takeover of the city’s major decision-making power would return control over planning and zoning to the city.
A proposed bill awaiting formal introduction by Sen. Vince Polistina and Assemblyman Don Guardian, both Republicans representing Atlantic County, would take planning and zoning responsibility in the city’s Tourism District away from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.
The agency was given power over those functions under the administration of former Gov. Chris Christie in 2011 as part of a package to seize control of major decision-making from the city, which was awash in financial distress and poor governance at the time.
