Getting a casino in Sullivan County was something residents talked about as a necessity for years. Town of Thompson Supervisor Bill Rieber says maybe expectations were too high when the county was finally awarded one. But since Resorts World Catskills opened in the town in February 2018, it’s brought more than 1,400 jobs and sparked development.
“In a county the size of Sullivan County with 80,000 people, that’s a very, very significant impact on employment and lives in general,” Rieber said.
The main shopping district in the town, once sparsely populated by small businesses, now has little trouble keeping tenants. Hotels and more chain stores opened there.
